If you have a cat, dog, or other furry pet, chances are that they will get fleas at one point or another. When a pet gets fleas, there’s also a strong possibility that those fleas can spread into your carpet. Here at Canady’s Termite & Pest Control, we want to help you keep your home comfortable and pest-free. In this article, we’ll be going over three tips for effective flea control for your home.

  • Vacuum. A good first step for flea control is to vacuum your floors, mattresses, and upholstery using powerful suction. Fleas and their eggs can hide in the tiniest gaps, but the suction from your vacuum cleaner should be enough to dislodge them. If possible, we at Canady’s Termite & Pest Control recommend using a vacuum bag you can dispose of rather than having to clean it out and risk coming into contact with what’s inside.
  • Heat. Another important step in flea control is to wash all your bedding, including your pet’s, in hot water, and to dry it on the hottest dryer setting. The heat will kill fleas in all stages of life, so it’s easy to see why this method is effective. You can also use a steam cleaner to kill fleas in your carpets and upholstery with the heat of the vapor.

Pesticides. Finally, we at Canady’s Termite & Pest Control recommend using a chemical treatment as the last step in your flea control efforts. Use a pesticide that has chemicals to kill both adult fleas (such as permethrin) and their eggs, larvae, and pupae (such as Methoprene). Make sure to wear gloves when applying the product and prevent your pets or anyone else from touching the areas in question until the spray has dried.
