Squashing Ant Control Myths

Ants seem less nefarious than other pests, which may be why many homeowners are content to try their own “home” methods of getting rid of ants. But the truth is that these methods are often myths that can’t actually solve the problem. Here are some of the most common ant control methods that are myths:

  • Myth #1: Cinnamon, Garlic, Pepper, Lemon, and Vinegar Can Kill or Repel Ants. None of these kitchen items kill ants. While it’s true that ants dislike the strong smell of each of these substances, the most any of these can do is throw off the ants’ scent trail. This is nothing more than a minor inconvenience for ants, who will still find a way into your living quarters regardless of the path they must take.

  • Myth #2: Pouring Boiling Water Over an Anthill Kills the Colony. Depending on the species, ant colonies can be several feet deep, so it’s unlikely that the boiling water would reach the queen, let alone an entire colony. Pouring boiling water over an anthill only kills ants on the surface, so it’s not an effective ant control method.
  • Myth #3: Oatmeal Kills Ants If They Eat It. Some people believe that if ants eat oats and then drink water, the oats will expand in their stomachs and kill them. This is not true because adult ants do not digest solid foods. They swallow liquids and bring solid food to feed to the larvae, but oats don’t kill the larvae either.
  • Myth #4: Chalk Can Deter Ants. Contrary to popular belief, drawing a chalk line won’t keep ants from entering your home. Much like the substances in myth #1, chalk can throw off the ants’ scent trail, but the ants will just find another entry point.
  • Myth #5: Club Soda Can Kill Fire Ants. Some people have claimed that pouring club soda on an anthill can kill a colony. The idea behind this myth is that the carbon dioxide suffocates the ants, but this is false.
